Suresh describes about LAGAAN's background score as follows. Visit his blog here for a complete analysis.

‘Lagaan’ is one such movie where moments like these are in plenty and its background score would always remain as THE masterpiece of Rahman. In Lagaan, what Rahman did was not just good music but also precise and apt score. He has used every single technique of background scoring in Lagaan. There are themes written for every important character in the movie, there are moments with situational or incidental music, there are moments where melodies from the songs are used, there are moments filled with silence, there are bangs, there are orchestral outbursts and all is there only when it has to be there and that is the greatness of this score.

Musical themes are written for important characters in the drama, to give completeness to the character sketch of each and everyone playing a prominent role in it and to quickly make the audience understand and relate to the characterization. The theme music can be inspired by any aspect of the character - their nature, their attitude, their actions, their mannerism, and their body language, their relationship with other main characters in the drama, their emotions, their mood or sometimes even their looks. Usually the main theme of the characters are used when they first appear on the screen, or when a trait of theirs which is critical for the drama is established for the first time, and it is used whenever the focus is shifted to that particular character in the movie or whenever the characters establish that particular trait of theirs. In Lagaan, we have musical themes for Bhuvan, Gauri, and Bhuvan’s mother, Captain Russell, Elizabeth, Laakha, Guran, Goli, Bagha, Tippu, Isar Kaaka and Yardley.
